MASS. EXPORT REPORT for 2005: Banner Year for Mass. Exporters
 
Massachusetts manufacturers set a new record of exporting merchandise to international markets in 2005, with the total of $22 billion surpassing the previous high reached in 2004. The top products exported were instruments at $4.7 billion, electric machinery at $4.5 billion, industrial machinery at $3.1 billion, pharmaceuticals at $2.6 billion (a 36% increase from 2004), and organic chemicals at $1.1 billion. Plastics also came in at $1 billion.

Leading markets for Mass. exports are Netherlands ($3 billion), Canada ($2.9 billion), Germany ($2.1 billion), Japan ($1.8 billion) and United Kingdom ($1.6 billion). Mainland China was the state's sixth largest export market at $882 million, and when Hong Kong (reported separately) is added, total sales for that region are $1.3 billion.
