The events calendar for the new year is just getting started. Learn about trade with emerging markets (Brazil, Turkey) and take advantage of multiple networking opportunities over the next several weeks.
EVENT: Tues. Jan. 24 – Australia Day Dinner & Raffle, 6:30-10pm, Boston
The American Australian Association presents the Australia Day Boston Dinner and the drawing of the 2012 Qantas Raffle. The evening includes a wine reception and four-course dinner. The raffle grand prize is two round trip plane tickets from Boston to Australia. Second prize is dinner for two at Rowes Wharf Sea Grille at the Boston Harbor Hotel. Third Prize is a $100 gift certificate for K.O Catering and Pies. Location is at the Boston Harbor Hotel. EVENT: Wed. Jan. 25 – Lecture on Turkey by Ahmet Altan, 4:30pm, Cambridge
The Kokkalis Program at the Harvard Kennedy School is hosting a lecture by Ahmet Altan, editor-in-chief and lead columnist of the independent Turkish Newspaper Taraf. His best-selling novels and sociopolitical commentaries have been banned as well as granted prizes, and his columns have consistently addressed taboo issues in Turkey. Location is at the Tsai Auditorium (1730 Cambridge Street) in Cambridge.

EVENT: Thurs. Feb. 2 – Doing Business in Brazil, 8:30-11am, Cambridge
The AIM International Business Council and the Massachusetts Office of International Trade (MOITI) present "Doing Business in Brazil," featuring keynote speaker Governor Deval Patrick and a panel of business experts. In December 2011, Governor Patrick and 50 Massachusetts business leaders visited Brazil on a Massachusetts Innovation Economy Trade Mission and explored opportunities to expand exports, increase investments and strengthen ties between Massachusetts and Brazil. At this event, a panel discussion on the opportunities and challenges of trade between Massachusetts and Brazil will be moderated by Rosabeth Moss Kanter of Harvard Business School. Panelists include Wayne Canty, CEO of Heat Trace Products; Susan Luo, VP Global Strategy of State Street Global Advisors; Anthony J.A. Patterson, COO of Iredale Mineral Cosmetics, Ltd.; and Joel Schwartz, Senior VP of EMC Corporation. Location of event is Microsoft Corporation, One Memorial Drive, Cambridge. The World Affairs Council of Western Massachusetts presents an Instant Issues event on The Current Status of Refugee Arrivals in Western Massachusetts: Our New Neighbors from the Middle East, Africa, and Asia. Speakers include Shemariah Blum-Evitts, Assistant Program Manager, and Mohammed Najeeb, Case Management Coordinator, for Lutheran Social Services of New England. EVENT: Wed. Feb. 8 – International Business Forum and Networking, 4:30pm, Boston
The Global Business Association of New England (GBANE) is hosting the 18th Annual International Networking Evening & Business Forum "Global Trade & Economic Outlook: Implications for International Business in the Year Ahead". The evening will feature speakers Geoffrey Somes, Senior Economist with State Street Global Advisors, and Michael Goodman, Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Public Policy at UMass Dartmouth. Attendees will also experience an international business resource center with international trade associations and government agencies exhibiting. Cost is $45. Location is at the offices of Bingham McCutchen LLP in Boston. Pre-registration through the Massachusetts Export Center is recommended by February 2.
